I’ve shared about how I do things as a wheelchair user, and I’ve shared different wellness products and activities that I do on a daily basis. But, what I haven’t really shared about is mindset, self-esteem, and confidence.
Maybe because I struggle with that too
But, I have grown so much in the past year and will continue to grow, that I need to share what has worked and what all I’ve done. So, in April 2019 I began to see a counselor, again. I have struggled with depressive symptoms for a while – even before my injury. I’ve seen a couple of counselors here and there to work through them and cannot give enough praise to this profession.

We all struggle with something. We go to the doctor’s to help with body functions, so why would we not go to professionals to help with brain function? Our society has stigmatized therapy and counseling like it’s a sign of weakness. I’m here to say it is actually a sign of strength.
Strength is wanting to be a better you
In addition to counseling, I also enjoy reading “self-help” or personal development books. There is one that I just finished that I already want to reread. It’s called “You Can Heal Your Life” by Louise Hay. I bought it off of Amazon, and you can too by clicking here: “You Can Heal Your Life.”
This book argues that all dis-ease is caused by our thoughts. And, all dis-ease is caused by a fear of something or by anger. After reading this, I know this is the area that I need to prioritize and focus on. I have thoughts of unworthiness (fear of people not liking me or thinking I don’t know what I’m talking about) and thoughts that I don’t deserve to reach my goals (same fear). These fears are brought by my past – but when analyzing them, all can be proven wrong.
That’s the power of thoughts.
Change your thoughts and you will change your life. I didn’t write that, and I don’t know who did, but isn’t it the truth? I have seen/heard this quote so many times, but I’ve never truly believed it. Like I’ve mentioned, I’ve been working on my mindset, attitude, and beliefs, and the more that I do that, the more this quote becomes true.
I’m learning that our physical manifestations – all our aches and pains – come from an emotional place. Emotions are stored in our bodily systems and organs and manifest themselves as physical pains. The majority of the time the emotion stems from anger or from fear. Angry about the past or fearful of the future. Of the unknown. When we learn how to let that go, so do our aches and pains. Then, you start taking better care of yourself and continue to feel better and happier.
When you express gratitude and find joy in the small things, that’s where the magic happens. When you stop living in fear more joy will find you. What you think becomes your reality. The more positive conversations you have with yourself, the better your life becomes.
Like attracts like, right?
Look around your environment. If you are surrounded by mostly negative attributes, take a look inward at your own thoughts and see how much of it is negative. I am really good at spewing positive energy into the world, but I had to take a look at my own beliefs and thoughts about myself before I started feeling that positive energy and the universe has been rewarding me.
So, how do you get started?
Start by expressing three small pieces of gratitude, every single day! Get a journal. I don’t care if it’s a Push Journal (code ‘Megs10’ for 10% off), another agenda/journal, a notebook, note pad, or even a napkin. Write down 3 things you are grateful for in your life EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.
These can be big things or small things. I express gratitude for my coffee, sunshine, great weather, a roof over my head, a car to commute in, relationships in my life, having met someone that serves me in some way, a new account that I found on social media, my job, my career, my passion, products, and material items I have, etc.
When a negative thought arises, recognize it. First, recognize that you are having the thought and then find examples of how that isn’t true. This will be hard at first, but the more you practice, the easier it becomes and the more positive your life becomes.
