As the warm breeze of summer approaches, it's a perfect time to explore outdoor activities and enjoy the beauty of the season. For individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI), summer can offer unique opportunities for relaxation, adventure, and connecting with nature. Here are some tips and activities tailored to make the most out of your summer:
1. Accessible Beach Days:
Many beaches now offer accessibility features such as boardwalks, beach wheelchairs, and accessible parking. Spend a day by the water, enjoy the sun, and feel the sand between your toes. Look for beach destinations with accessible facilities and support services nearby. If you are in Northeast Ohio like I am, Lake Erie beaches offer an array of activities for everyone. A quick online search can reveal what accessibility features any beach has.
2. Adaptive Sports:
Summer offers various adaptive sports, such as wheelchair basketball, tennis, pickleball, or hand cycling. Participate in local events or join a group for regular games. Check out adaptive equipment providers or local community centers that offer adaptive sports programs.
The United Spinal Association of Northeast Ohio offers its members a handcycle lending program that allows them to rent one of seven handcycles for 30 days. Visit www.usaneo.org for more details. I love recreational sports like handcycling, kayaking, and hiking in the summer season. The Cleveland and Lorain County Metroparks offer many trails with different challenges and modalities.
3. Picnics and Outdoor Dining:
Gather friends and family for a picnic in a local park with accessible picnic tables and paths. Enjoy the fresh air and delicious food in a scenic setting. Research restaurants or cafes with accessible outdoor seating areas to savor a meal under the open sky.
Or, join The United Spinal Association of Northeast Ohio at their annual Handcycle and Picnic in the Park on August 10, 2024. All the details can be found on www.usaneo.org/calendar.
4. Nature Trails and Parks:
Many national and state parks provide accessible trails and paths designed for wheelchair users. Take a leisurely stroll or roll through nature's beauty. Look for trails with even surfaces, gentle slopes, and accessible viewpoints for a scenic experience. Our Cuyahoga National Park has paved trails with beautiful views. One of my favorites is the Brandywine Falls.
5. Boat Cruises and Water Activities:
Explore accessible boat tours or cruises available on lakes or rivers in your area. Enjoy the tranquility of the water and the scenic views. I want to check out the Goodtime III boat tour along the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie.
Look for adaptive water sports, such as kayaking or canoeing, which may be available through local adaptive recreation organizations. If you know me, you know I love to kayak. Water has a special place in my soul and is everything to me. We’ve gotten out twice this year and are looking at doing more around Ohio.
6. Gardening and Outdoor Projects:
Create a garden at home with raised beds or container gardening that allows easy access. Plant flowers or vegetables and enjoy watching them grow throughout the summer. Engage in outdoor projects like painting or woodworking in a comfortable, accessible workspace.
7. Cultural and Community Events:
Attend outdoor concerts, festivals, or art fairs that offer accessible seating and facilities. Immerse yourself in local culture and entertainment. Check community calendars or event listings for accessible events happening in your area. Facebook Events is usually a good starting point for me to find out what’s going on, and from there, I try to go to the host’s website or event page for more details. Happy hunting!
8. Relaxation and Wellness:
Take time to relax and rejuvenate with outdoor yoga sessions, meditation in the park, or simply soaking up the sun on your patio. Consider accessible spas or wellness centers that offer treatments like massages or hydrotherapy. Many yoga studios in my area offer a free (or donation-based) Yoga in the Park session. Check it out for your area.
We can’t enjoy outside without considering the heat and other weather conditions. Additionally, we need to think about what tools, accessories, and medical equipment we might need in case of an emergency when we are out for an extended period of time. Here are some tips for a safe summer.
Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Summer:
**Stay Hydrated**
Drink plenty of water, especially in hot weather, to stay hydrated.
**Sun Protection**
Use sunscreen and wear a hat to protect your skin from the sun's rays. Some medications can cause sun sensitivity, so speak with your physician to find out if any of yours do. Find shade where possible.
**Plan Ahead**
Research accessibility features and facilities before visiting outdoor destinations or events. Think about entry, bathrooms, navigating the space, and parking (some outdoor events are in gravel lots).
**Stay Connected**
Inform friends or family about your plans and carry necessary medical supplies or medications.
**Listen to Your Body**
Pace yourself and take breaks as needed to avoid overexertion. If you don’t rest, your body will pick the most inconvenient time to make you rest. You don’t want that.
Summer is a time to embrace the outdoors, connect with loved ones, and create lasting memories. With careful planning and a sense of adventure, individuals with spinal cord injuries can fully enjoy all that the season has to offer. Whether you prefer relaxing by the beach or exploring nature trails, there are countless ways to make this summer an unforgettable experience. Embrace the warmth, embrace the beauty, and embrace the joy of summer!
